Red Desert Tour: DSO visits Alice Springs
In early September members of the DSO packed their instruments and hit the road, travelling down the track to Alice Springs for their Red Desert Tour. Thanks to the support of Territory construction icon Sitzler, the DSO was in Alice for five days and performed three concerts as part of the 2011 Alice Desert Festival.
Songs from Big Sky Country was the final product of a collaboration between the DSO and local artists Warren H. Williams, Catherine Satour and Jacinta Price. The concert featured the performers’ original songs, which had been adapted for an orchestra by DSO Artistic Director Leif Sundstrup. The melding of creative techniques made for a unique audience experience and the beautiful evening down at Anzac Oval was a tour highlight.
On the final night of the tour, over 2000 people packed the Alice Springs Desert Park for Symphony Under the Stars. With the MacDonnell Ranges as a spectacular backdrop, DSO shared the stage with His Honour Mr Tom Pauling, AO QC, Administrator of the Northern Territory; Warren H. Williams; Larapinta Primary School choir and singer-songwriter Stephanie Harrison for a lively night of classics, original compositions and rock favourites.
