Vacancy: Principal Positions

1st Violin, 2nd Violin, Viola or Cello

Darwin Symphony Orchestra is currently accepting applications for string principal positions for 2023-24.

All applicants are required to submit an application and undertake an audition and interview. We encourage all interested musicians to apply; please click here to see the full position requirements and audition information. 

Application & Audition Requirements 

  • A short cover letter (no more than two pages) detailing your response to the selection criteria.
  • Your CV, including two references.
  • Your availability on Thursday 17 November. 

Each audition will be of approximately 5 – 10 mins duration and consist of: 

  • Two short contrasting orchestral excerpts, available online from Monday 17 October at dso.org.au/about/join-dso/ 
  • One work (or part of) of your own choice (maximum five mins) 

You should prepare all the above material for your audition.  A short interview will follow your audition. 

Important dates: 

Excerpts will be online from Monday 17 October
Applications will close on Monday 7 November
Applicants will be notified of audition time by Wednesday 9 November

Double Bass, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Percussion/Timpani

Darwin Symphony Orchestra is currently accepting applications for multiple principal positions (volunteer) for 2023-24.

Application & Audition Requirements 

All applicants are required to undertake an audition and interview. Send an email advising of your interest in applying to tania.watts@cdu.edu.au and include your name, contact number, instrument, and availability on Saturday 19 November. 

Each audition will be of approximately 5 – 10 mins duration and consist of: 

  • Two short contrasting orchestral excerpts, available online from Monday 17 October at dso.org.au/about/join-dso/ 
  • One work (or part of) of your own choice (maximum five mins)

If you would like to play with us, please click on the button below to download the PDF form and email it to Orchestra Manager Tania Watts who will contact you about position availability.

When a place is available in the orchestra, you will be invited to a rehearsal. A trial period of up to 3 rehearsals will enable the Artistic Director/Chief Conductor and the relevant section leader to determine suitability.

Player member $40.00
Non-playing member $20.00
