Artist Spotlight: Netanela Mizrahi
Netanela Mizrahi is a composer living and working on unceded Larrakia Country. Her work across Indigenous communities, Immigration Detention, and Palliative Care led to a 2017 Churchill Fellowship to investigate the impact of music in communities experiencing trauma. As Creative Director of the Djari Project with Galpu songman Mr Gurruwiwi, she received a 2020 Australian Art Music Award and the 2021 National Indigenous Music Award (Indigenous Language category).
Her compositions and collaborations are recognised nationally for their commitment to social justice and human rights. Recent projects include Gurrulwa Guligi, an orchestral work commemorating the 50th anniversary of Cyclone Tracy with Dr Aunty Bilawara Lee; Wuyal’s Journey, created with Banula Marika; and Dalba Gulwa, Larrakia-language songs written with Dr Aunty Bilawara Lee. She also co-created Stories of Water and Earth with poet Melanie Mununggurr, commissioned by Ensemble Offspring and Arafura Music Collective and performed at the Sydney Opera House in 2025.
A newly commissioned work by Netanela Mizrahi, Ground, will make its premiere and open the evening at our upcoming concert From Common Ground, marking her third year as our Composer in Residence.
You can also gain insights into Netanela’s new work and its place within the program at the pre-concert talk with Artsitic Director and Chief Conductor, Richard Mills AO. This is a free event for all ticket holders.
