Darwin Symphony Orchestra’s 2025 season will conclude with a spectacular grand finale and a heartfelt farewell to Artistic Director and Chief Conductor, Jonathan Tooby. This special concert will be a joyful yet poignant celebration of Jon’s remarkable artistic vision and his transformative contribution to DSO over the past several years. 

This concert promises a thrilling journey through three evocative works; Berstein’s vibrant and dazzling Candide Overture, Weber’s charming and spirited Bassoon Concerto, featuring soloist Rob Llewellyn, and Tchaikovsky’s profoundly moving Symphony No.6, Pathétique. 
 
Jon offers his personal insights into Tchaikovsky’s masterpieces, reflecting on the profound emotional depth and human connection within the composer’s works., “For me Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony embodies the word ‘Soul’, it so beautifully speaks to what makes us human, encompassing every emotion from unbridled joy to deepest longing and suffering, and to the fragility of our day to day lives. It is a musical roller coaster if ever there was one in classical music and an absolute favourite the world over.” 

Claire Kilgariff, Chair of DSO, reflects on the significance of this event, “Symphony of the Soul is both a celebration of Darwin Symphony Orchestra and a heartfelt farewell to Jon Tooby, whose vision and artistry have profoundly shaped DSO over the past seven years. This finale features Tchaikovsky’s extraordinary Sixth Symphony, the Pathétique – a musical and emotional experience of grand proportions widely regarded as Tchaikovsky’s finest. It is a fitting tribute to Jon’s legacy of courage, and creativity, and a moment for us all to reflect on the power of music to stir the soul. We look forward to sharing this experience with you.”
